Executive Summary

Professor JW Goodby's expertise lies in the synthesis and characterisation of low molar mass, polymeric and dendritic liquid crystals. The range of his synthetic experience extends from the preparation of liquid crystals for display applications to sugar based systems for applications in surfactant science. His interests also lie in the up-scaling of materials for use in the applications of high yield strength polymers. In addition to the preparations of materials he is also expert in the study and characterisation of liquid crystals phases by thermal polarised light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, refractometry, and electrical fields. To a lesser extent he also has interests in the study of mesophase structure by X-ray diffraction and freeze fracture. His particular field of study is in the area of chiral materials and chiral liquid crystals.
