Executive Summary

Duncan Bruce has a research background in coordination chemistry, which allowed him to develop his interest in metallomesogens (molecular, metal-containing liquid crystals) over many years. This work has focused both on the properties of the ligands and the complexes, and many important structure/property correlations have been established. Current research themes, developed more fully on his web pages, include the biaxial nematic phase, halogen-bonded liquid crystals, bent-core mesogens and lyotropic systems. Particular in the lyotropic work is the study and application of metallosurfactants, which led to projects being established in the preparation and application of mesostructured metal oxides often doped with nanoparticulate metals.
