Executive Summary

Martin Bates is a computational chemist, interested in understanding the properties and behaviour of liquid crystals and nanoparticles at the molecular level. Although the problems studied can vary in nature, similar techniques are used; these usually rely on being able to construct models to represent the individual molecules or particles, and investigating how the molecules interact in a bulk system as a function of temperature, pressure, etc. Current interests are the biaxial nematic phase in bent core and rod-disc systems, the biaxial nematic phase in confined systems, colloidal particles of unusual shapes and nanoparticles in a liquid crystalline medium.
