Nanotechnology: Molecular boojoms anyone?

1st January 2006

Materials Chemistry Forum News of the Royal Society of Chemistry highlights the creation of chiral nanoparticles by the Universities of Neuchatel in Switzerland Erlangen-N¸rnberg in Germany and York. The chiral nanoparticles, which have at their hearts fullerene[60], are swathed in chiral mesogens that spiral around the central fullerene ball, thereby creating a molecular 'boojom'. The boojom has poles at the top and bottom of its structure. Through molecular recognition processes the boojoms collectively form a helical chiral nematic phase.
