ESF SONS-II and EPSRC funded research network starts in York. The network partners along with York include the Universities of Paderborn, Strasbourg, Warsaw, Zaragoza and Neuchâtel. Coordinator John Goodby says that we will be investigating the synthesis and characterisation of liquid crystal systems that incorporate nanoparticles into their structures, where the nanoparticles may have optical or magnetic properties. There is the opportunity to create, for example, novel fluid magnetic materials which can be oriented in a magnetic field says Goodby.
