John Goodby and Peter Raynes FRS entertained an public audience with many demonstrations on liquid crystal technologies; from melting behaviour and a new state of matter, to cif kitchen cleaners, to colour changing cloths, thermometers and lip glaze, to Kevlar and bullet-proof vests, to mobile telephones and flat screen TVs. At one point Peter Raynes demonstrated how easy it is to make a simple liquid crystal display (LCD).
