The Liquid Crystal Group offers a one year taught Masters of Science Course in Liquid Crystals and Nanoscience. Information about the course is available
chem-grad@york.ac.uk.
Liquid crystals are often identified from the defect textures seen in the polarising microscope. These course notes give background information on how the more common defects are formed and their structures.
The course notes are available from us as pdf files.
The syntheses of liquid crystals often follow general patterns. This course explores, through synthetic pathways, the syntheses of nematic materials, smectic liquid crystals, and disc-like compounds. Special emphasis is placed on the synthetic pathways to specific chiral compounds.
The course notes are available from us as pdf files.
